Music with soft edges and a steady centre, a space to access and rest in the deep heart’s core for a while. Music of Josef Suk, Pēteris Vasks, Nadia Boulanger, Ann Southam, Christopher Cerrone, Sandy Denny and Xani Kolac.

Pianist Georgina Lewis has earned a reputation for her sensitivity and authentic, 'unfiltered musicality’. She focuses her attention to contemporary classical music which allows space to explore lyricism and subtleties of colour and tone.

Works for string quartet and sextet, for the transfiguration and enlightenment of the mind. Featuring Schoenberg's famous and mesmerising Transfigured Night for string sextet and three works by cutting-edge American string composers Gabriella Smith, Caroline Shaw and Leilehua Lanzilotti.

Established in 2022, Melbourne Strings comprises top classical string players from Melbourne. MS celebrates the virtuosity and beauty of stringed instruments and have presented engaging and original programs at the Hanson Dyer Hall, New Music Studio concert series at the Melbourne Conservatorium and have been recipients of the City of Melbourne Arts Grant.

Josh Hooke, piano

This concert originally featured pianist Modi Deng, who unfortunately had to withdraw due to personal circumstances. We hope to welcome her back for another performance soon.

We are grateful and delighted to welcome Josh Hooke for this performance. Originally from country Victoria, Josh recently completed a PhD in Music Performance at the University of Melbourne, under the guidance of Professors Ian Holtham and Paul Kildea. Previously, Joshua was invited to undertake periods of intensive private study in Vienna with Paul Badura-Skoda, and was among his last students. He also studies regularly in London with Imogen Cooper.

In addition to performances throughout Australia, Josh performs regularly in Europe and the UK. Notable highlights include solo performances in London, Portugal, Austria, France, and The Netherlands. He has performed at various festivals and series, including as the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival, The International Holland Music Sessions, as a laureate of the International Piano Seminar of Óbidos (Portugal), Melbourne Design Week and the Melba Hall Lunch Hour Series.

Josh has been a finalist and prizewinner in a number of competitions, including the Antena 2/SIPO prize, the Melbourne Recital Centre’s Great Romantics Competition and the Australian National Piano Award (where he also received the People’s Choice Award and the prize for the best performance of a work by Schumann). He was also a recipient of A Victorian Premier’s Award for Music, the Melbourne Conservatorium’s Lady Turner Prize, as well numerous other prizes and scholarships.

Josh regularly collaborates with multidisciplinary artist Jack Vanzet, with their debut record ‘Composites’ released in 2021, to wide acclaim.
